The Places We Take You

Not a list of countries — the particular places we walk you through, and why each one is on the itinerary.

Every journey we run is built around these. We return to the same places, with the same guides and the same local partners, which is why our travelers are welcomed rather than processed.

Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle is one of Ghana’s most significant historical landmarks and a powerful reminder of the transatlantic slave trade. Located along the coast of Ghana’s Central Region, the castle became a major holding point where thousands of enslaved Africans were confined in overcrowded dungeons before being transported across the Atlantic.

Today, visitors can walk through the male and female dungeons, courtyards, and the famous Door of No Return while learning about the experiences of those who were held there. The castle offers a deeply moving journey through African history, creating an important space for education, remembrance, reflection, and ancestral connection.

Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle, located along Ghana’s Central Region coastline, is one of the most historically significant sites connected to the transatlantic slave trade. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1482 as São Jorge da Mina, it is the oldest surviving European building in sub-Saharan Africa. Over time, the castle became a major holding point where enslaved Africans were confined in harsh dungeons before being transported across the Atlantic.

Today, Elmina Castle stands as a powerful memorial to those who suffered and died during the slave trade. Visitors walk through the dungeons, courtyards, and the infamous Door of No Return while learning about the human experiences behind this history. The experience offers an important opportunity for remembrance, education, reflection, and connection with Africa’s past.

Assin Manso Slave River

Assin Manso Slave River

Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River is one of Ghana’s most important historical sites connected to the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were brought here during their forced journey from the interior of Ghana toward the coastal castles. At the river, they were allowed to bathe for what became known as the “Last Bath” before continuing their journey to the coast.

Today, Assin Manso serves as a sacred place of remembrance, reflection, and ancestral reconnection. Visitors can walk to the river, learn about the experiences of those who passed through the area, and reflect on the strength and resilience of the millions of Africans whose lives were forever changed by the transatlantic slave trade.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra honors Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leader who guided Ghana to independence in 1957 and became the nation’s first President. The park stands on the historic grounds associated with Ghana’s declaration of independence and serves as the final resting place of Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia.

Visitors can explore the museum, mausoleum, historical photographs, personal belongings, and exhibits documenting Nkrumah’s life, Ghana’s independence struggle, and the development of Pan Africanism. More than a memorial, the park provides an opportunity to understand Ghana’s journey toward freedom and Nkrumah’s broader vision for African unity and self determination.

Black Star Square and Independence

Black Star Square and Independence

Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is one of Ghana’s most important national landmarks and a powerful symbol of the country’s freedom. Located in Accra, the square commemorates Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, when Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule in the modern era.

Visitors can see the iconic Black Star Gate, Independence Arch, and other monuments representing Ghana’s freedom, national identity, and Pan-African heritage. The square remains a major location for national celebrations and ceremonies, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the history and symbolism of Ghana’s journey toward independence.

The Accra Arts Centre for National Culture

The Accra Arts Centre for National Culture

The Accra Arts Centre, officially the Centre for National Culture, is one of Accra’s most vibrant destinations for experiencing Ghanaian art, craftsmanship, and culture. Located near the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, the centre brings together artisans and traders offering traditional textiles, Kente, beads, wood carvings, sculptures, pottery, paintings, clothing, jewelry, and handcrafted souvenirs.

Visitors can shop for authentic Ghanaian gifts, interact with local artisans, explore the art gallery and craft market, and experience the creativity behind Ghana’s artistic traditions. It is an excellent stop for travelers who want to take home a meaningful piece of Ghana while supporting local artists and craftspeople.

Labadi Beach

Labadi Beach

Labadi Beach, officially known as La Pleasure Beach, is one of Accra’s most popular coastal destinations. Located along the Atlantic Ocean, the beach offers visitors a lively atmosphere where they can relax along the shoreline, enjoy local food, music, entertainment, and experience the energetic social culture of Accra.

The beach is especially vibrant on weekends and holidays, when music, cultural performances, horseback riding, food vendors, and social activities bring the shoreline to life.
